What to Wear to a Boudoir Session: A Guide from a South Shore MA Boudoir Photographer

*By Stefanie Lynn | The Pouting Room | Marion, MA*

If you’ve been Googling “what to wear to a boudoir session” at 11pm while simultaneously second-guessing your entire closet, you are in very good company.

This is one of the first things women ask me when they book, and it makes complete sense. What you wear is tied to how you feel, and how you feel is tied to how confident you look in your photos. So let’s talk through it honestly, from someone who has guided hundreds of women through exactly this moment.

First: You Don’t Need to Buy Anything New

This is the thing I tell every single client, and I mean it. Some of my most stunning images have been shot in a worn-in white button-down shirt, a simple black bodysuit, or a cotton robe someone grabbed off the back of their bathroom door.

Boudoir is not about the lingerie. It is about the woman wearing it.

That said, if shopping for something new makes you feel excited and prepared, absolutely do it. Just don’t let “I don’t have anything to wear” become the reason you keep putting this off.

What Actually Photographs Beautifully

Here’s what I look for when helping clients plan their wardrobe:

**Lace and texture** photograph incredibly well. They catch the light, add visual interest, and create a softness that solid fabrics sometimes don’t. You don’t need an elaborate set; even a simple lace bralette with matching underwear is stunning.

**Neutral and deep tones** tend to be the most flattering on camera. Creams, blacks, nudes, burgundies, and deep greens all work beautifully in both light and airy and dark and moody settings. Bright neons and busy patterns can compete with your face, which is never what we want.

**Robes and cover-ups** give you a beautiful transitional piece; something to wear at the start of the session while you’re still getting comfortable, that can then be pulled open or draped for some of the most elegant shots of the day.

**Your partner’s oversized shirt** is genuinely one of my favorite things to photograph. It’s intimate, it’s personal, and it photographs like a dream.

**Heels** are optional but elongate the leg beautifully, even in shots where they aren’t the focus. If you love them, bring them. If they make you feel wobbly and uncomfortable, leave them home.

How Many Outfits Should You Bring?

I recommend bringing **three to four options**. More than that, and you’ll spend your session time decision-making instead of being present in the experience.

Think of it this way: one piece that feels soft and feminine, one that feels a little more bold or editorial, and one that feels completely and personally *you*; whether that’s a vintage slip dress, a sports bra and underwear, or nothing but a cream-colored sheet.

What About Body Shapers and Shapewear?

Leave them home. Shapewear can leave marks on your skin that show up in photos, and honestly, you do not need them. My job, and the job of posing, lighting, and 21 years of experience, is to help you look and feel incredible exactly as you are. The camera will not be pointed at your insecurities. I promise you that.

What If I Want to Do Fine Art Nudes?

I do offer fine art nudes and nudescapes, which can include breasts and bums but never genitals. If you’re interested in this, we’ll talk about it on your planning call so you feel completely prepared and comfortable. Many women who never imagined going this route end up creating some of their most powerful images without any wardrobe at all.

A Note on Professional Hair and Makeup

If you want to feel fully polished and pampered before we even pick up the camera, I offer professional hair and makeup as an optional add-on for $200. My stylists work with women of all skin tones and hair types, and many clients say the glam experience is what helped them finally relax into the session.

That said, some of my most natural and beautiful sessions have been done with the client’s own makeup. You get to choose what feels most like you.
