Let’s be real—Photoshop and beauty filters are wrecking our self-confidence. Everywhere we turn, we’re drowning in images of “perfect” people with glass-smooth skin, impossibly tiny waists, and curves that seem straight out of a cartoon. And the worst part? Most of these images aren’t even real.
We scroll through Instagram and suddenly feel like we’re not good enough. Our skin isn’t flawless, our stomach isn’t flat enough, our thighs touch (as they should, by the way), and now we’re spiraling into self-doubt over a damn picture that was airbrushed into oblivion. And if you’ve ever looked at a heavily edited photo of yourself and thought, “Wow, I look amazing here, but I don’t actually look like this in real life…” then you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s gut-wrenching. Instead of boosting our confidence, it makes us feel worse.
When we constantly see these fake, retouched bodies, our brains start believing that’s the standard. And that’s dangerous. According to this article, exposure to photoshopped images can mess with our self-esteem, leading to body dysmorphia, anxiety, and even depression. Young girls grow up thinking their natural, beautiful bodies aren’t “good enough” because they don’t look like the influencers they follow.
And let’s not pretend adults are immune to this. We’re just as guilty of comparing ourselves to these fake images. We add a filter here, smooth out a line there, just trying to keep up with an impossible standard that shouldn’t even exist in the first place.
I’ve made a firm decision in my work—I do not alter bodies in my boudoir photography. I truly believe that photoshopped images destroy self-confidence. The only retouching I do is minor skin smoothing if a client requests it. Because here’s the thing: I never want someone to look at their photos and think, “Damn, I wish I actually looked like that.” No. I want you to look at your images and say, “Damn, I do look like that. That’s me.”
This is your body, your beauty, and it deserves to be celebrated exactly as it is. Not as some altered, airbrushed version of what society says you should look like.
I’m begging you—stop using those face-tuning apps and beauty filters that shrink your nose and plump your lips. You don’t need them. I promise. Your real, unfiltered face is stunning. Your body, as it is right now, is worthy. The more we normalize real, unedited images, the more we can undo the damage these fake ones have caused.
Let’s start showing up as ourselves. Let’s teach our daughters, our sisters, and our friends that they don’t need to change a damn thing to be beautiful. Because they already are.
If you’ve been questioning your worth, if you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror picking yourself apart—stop. Right now. You are so much more than a reflection in the glass or an edited photo on a screen. You are real, raw, beautiful, and worthy, exactly as you are. The client in the images below was ecstatic with her boudoir photographs – none of which were altered to change who she is.
I dare you to take a photo of yourself—no filters, no retouching. Look at it. That woman staring back? She is enough. And if you need someone to remind you just how stunning you are, I’m here. Let’s capture the real, unfiltered you—because that’s the woman the world needs to see.
