On June 5, 2018, Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News anchor who is the organization’s chairwoman, announced that future Miss America competitions will not include a swimsuit portion. Instead, candidates will participate in a live interactive session with judges.
Swimsuits have been an integral part of the competition since 1921, when it was founded as a way to keep tourists in Atlantic City one day longer during their summer vacation. However, in an era of growing attention to unrealistic beauty standards and increasing appreciation of women of all shapes and sizes, the swimsuit competition has started to feel, well, outdated.
The Miss America Organization, whose leadership is now mostly female, came to the decision in March but kept it secret until recently.
“We’re not going to judge you on your appearance,” said Carlson. “We are moving [Miss America] forward and evolving it in this cultural revolution.”
