A different approach to self-love.

The fundamental principle behind body neutrality is viewing the body in terms of the function it serves. To proponents of this philosophy, the body exists only as a vehicle to help you move throughout the world to discover and do the things that make you happy. Body neutrality is defined by the acceptance of your body for what it is, what it does for you, and how you feel about it.

Understanding that not all days can be good ones.

When the wave of body positivity hit society and started becoming more and more of a standard, some critics pointed out that the trend came with negative aspects to consider as well. We’re all for body positivity, but it can set expectations too high for some people who aren’t quite ready to commit to fully loving their body every moment of every day. There’s a lot of pressure that comes with trying to stay positive about anything, especially self-image, and in turn a lot of guilt when you fail to do so.

Body neutrality, on the other hand, is about embracing the reality that you’re not always going to love the skin you’re in—and that’s okay! Self-love is not always attainable, but body neutrality reminds you that self-hate is not your only other option.

Body neutrality is about just being.

When it comes down to it, this philosophy is about trying not to judge or retain any strong emotions about your appearance. Your body gives you the power to live out your dreams and that’s all that matters. Reduce stress and ruminating thoughts about how you look and shift your focus to self-care! Your body is what it is, and that’s okay. What’s important is that you make a continuous and authentic effort to do healthy things for yourself.
